Shorties Tournament

 

The Shorties Festival is a computer-computer tournament between top engines with as goal to shed some light on a relative unexplored area in the game of chess namely how to play the opening if only 2 or 3 moves are given in advance. Base will be 2 special Noomen opening sets.

 

  1. Noomen 2-move Testsuite - 200 positions - Thus a match will produce 400 games.
  2. Noomen 3-move Testsuite - 500 positions - Thus a match will produce 1000 games.

 

Specifics:

  • Hardware HP Z800 8 core, 8 Gb RAM, approx 2.8 GHz running 4 matches simultaneously.
  • Time control: 40 moves in 4 minutes CCRL/CEGT style.
  • Single processor only.
  • Permanent Brain = off
  • No opening book allowed.
  • No learning allowed.
  • No table bases since they may influence other cores.
  • Interface: Arena because of the live coverage.

As first try we pitch Komodo 9.42 and Stockfish 7 because a) I don't have the latest Komodo and b) the need for 2 engines closely rated in strength and both versions fit the purpose, Komodo 9.42 is rated 3345 and Stockfish 7 is rated 3355 on the CCRL 40/4 rating list of friday December 1, 2017.
